A fine-textured ornamental grass with striking blue-gray foliage that forms a compact mound. It is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, making it excellent for rock gardens, borders, and modern landscaping.

Why grow it

Blue fescue offers finer texture and more consistent blue-gray coloration than many ornamental grass alternatives, with lower water demands than comparable Festuca species once established. It matures to a neat, self-contained mound without aggressive spreading, making it useful where space is limited or where you want defined edges without frequent trimming. The foliage retains color through winter in most temperate climates, providing year-round visual interest.

Watch out for

In humid regions or poorly draining soils, the dense mound can trap moisture and encourage fungal issues, so ensure excellent drainage and allow air circulation. Clumps may decline after 3-4 years and benefit from division or replacement rather than heavy pruning. Overwatering is a common cause of decline, particularly in cool climates where natural rainfall is adequate.
