A low-growing moss with distinctive tall hair-like structures on its capsules, forming dense mats on moist forest floors and rocks. It prefers shaded, acidic conditions and is valued in shade gardens and terrariums.

Why grow it

Polytrichum juniperinum establishes denser, more uniform mats than many competing moss species in acidic shade, making it useful for stabilizing bare patches on forest floors or rock gardens. Unlike some mosses that require consistent misting, haircap moss tolerates periodic drying once established, reducing maintenance overhead in shade gardens. Its preference for poor, acidic soils means it performs reliably in conditions where other groundcovers struggle, without competing for nutrients.

Watch out for

This moss spreads slowly compared to vascular groundcovers, so patience is required before coverage becomes substantial. In very wet or poorly draining conditions, it may succumb to liverworts or algal overgrowth; air movement and drainage matter more than you might expect for a moisture-loving moss.
