Martagon lilies are elegant perennials with reflexed petals in shades of pink, purple, or white, producing distinctive turk's-cap flowers on tall stems. They prefer partial shade and are excellent for woodland gardens and naturalized settings.

Why grow it

Martagon lilies flower later in the season than many Asiatic and Oriental lily hybrids, extending bloom period in mixed plantings. They naturalize reliably in woodland conditions where many hybrid lilies struggle, making them useful for low-maintenance perennial borders. Unlike many commercial lily cultivars, martagons tolerate the partial shade and organic-rich soils typical of established garden settings.

Watch out for

Establishment can be slow, particularly from seed or young bulbs, so patience is needed before plants reach flowering size. Slugs and snails are attracted to emerging shoots in moist springs, and may require monitoring in susceptible gardens. Bulbs prefer a winter dormancy period and may perform poorly in warm climates with mild winters.
