A low-growing evergreen native shrub with purple-blue flowers and aromatic, finely textured foliage. It is very drought-tolerant once established and draws pollinators.

Why grow it

It stays more compact than many California native sages, so it suits foregrounds and smaller gardens where taller species like black sage would dominate. Once established, it needs little supplemental water in Mediterranean climates.

Watch out for

Plant in well-drained soil, since poor drainage, heavy clay or high humidity can cause decline and root rot. Water young plants regularly until their roots establish.
